Physical Education
Intent
At Trinity CE Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils in a supportive and challenging environment. We aspire for children to acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques; to further their knowledge and understanding of PE concepts and principles and develop their overall competence, to enjoy, and excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities.
We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times, to develop life skills and to achieve their own potential and personal best.
Children participate in competitive sport and through this we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect, values we hope to embed for future life.
We understand the importance PE, School Sport and Physical Activity has on childrens’ general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time, and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.
Swimming is an important life skill and we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.
Implementation
PE is taught at Trinity CE Primary School as an area of learning in its own right, as well as being integrated where possible with other curriculum areas. The key knowledge and skills of each topic are mapped across each year group. The skills in these areas are also therefore developed systematically, with the programme of study for each year group building on previous learning and preparing for subsequent years. Knowledge and skills are informed and linked to enable achievement of key stage end points, as informed by the 2014 National Curriculum.
We teach lessons so that children:
- develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.
- engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
- apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.
- enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other.
- develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Lessons are planned to utilise cross-curricular links, as well as the context of the school (including school and local grounds and access to facilities and community role models, such as PE ambassadors, with specialist skills). The varied curriculum is designed to enable all children to enjoy physical activity and to experience success in sport. An extensive extra-curricular provision also provides further challenge and access to a range of physical activity. All children have the opportunity to participate in PE at their own level of development, with sports coaches from MNR, Henley Hawkes or their own class teacher ensuring that lessons cater for individual needs. As well as securing and building on a range of skills, children develop knowledge of the basic rules of a range of games and activities. They experience positive competition and a strong focus is placed on developing good sporting attitudes. Children learn in a safe environment and have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
PE at Trinity CE Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; Invasion Games, Net & Wall Games, Strike and Field Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor & Adventure Activities and Swimming.
Children participate in two PE lessons each week, covering two contrasting sporting activities. In the summer term, KS2 will take swimming lessons at Gillotts Leisure Centre.
The Long Term PE Curriculum Overview sets out the PE Units/Activities which are to be taught each half term throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
We use and adapt a Scheme of Learning from Get Set 4 PE to ensure planning, content and delivery is age appropriate. This scheme ensures lessons, year on year, are progressive.
We assess children each term (in our 4 strands), with a bespoke assessment package, which tracks progress throughout the year in the four strands of our PE curriculum – Physical, Cognitive, Personal and Health.
The emphasis of our PE curriculum is inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND.
All children are taught by a qualified PE specialist from MNR / Henley Hawkes for the duration of up to 12 weeks. This equates to one lesson per week. The second one hour lesson is taught by the teacher through Get Set 4 PE.
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 attend swimming lessons for one term each year.
We promote both participation and competition through PE and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons and through Inter-School sports competitions.
Children participate in workshops / whole school events, sourced by school and delivered by outside providers, covering a variety of sports throughout the year, providing the children with an opportunity to experience new activities, learn new skills, improve their fitness and to try something new.
All children in KS1 and KS2 have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular sports activities throughout the year. Our PP children have opportunities to join one club per term free of charge.
We offer a Residential OAA experience for children in Year 6 each year.
We have an annual inclusive House Sports Day, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.
All children participate in whole school weekly sessions of “The Daily Mile.”
Impact
At Trinity CE Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental wellbeing. We aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, which hopefully becomes part of their future life outside of Primary School. Children who have opportunities to participate in sport after school can also represent the school at sporting events from local to county level.
In PE, we also measure impact by:
- Pupil questionnaires/voice
- PE lesson observations
- PE Premium spend analysis
- Analysis of participation at after school clubs and LSSP competitions
- Assessment data
